What is Model UN?

Model UN is a program for students of all ages to learn about international relations and to gain a better sense of what a varied and fascinating world we live in. It is also a perfect "hands on" way to gain experience with basic skills -- such as communication, negotiation tactics, and conflict prevention -- that we all need in our day-to-day lives. Each year approximately 60,000 high school and university students participate in a variety of "Model United Nations" programs worldwide. Each program is run independently at high schools, but goals common to all programs are to increase international understanding and develop the art of peaceful negotiation among potential national and international leaders. Program participants are assigned a country that they will represent in a simulated General Assembly session. Several international political issues are identified by the group that will serve as the focus of discussions. Participants meet, caucus, prepare policy papers, debate issues, draft and vote on resolutions.

MUN at Watchung Hills

The individual chapter of Model United Nations established at Watchung Hills meets every Thursday (unless otherwise stated) in Mrs. Koppel’s room, 274 in the upstairs of the south building. Participants select countries to research every week for a mock resolution debate. One participant volunteers to create a mock UN resolution, which is debated on at the next meeting.
